BIG PICTURE:
Residents of Beacon RV Mobile Home Park in Ilwaco are set to receive $400,000 in restitution following a lawsuit against the park’s owners, Michael and Denise Werner. The lawsuit stems from the Werners’ illegal eviction and utility shutoff notices, as well as dangerous conditions in the park, leaving a deep impact on the lives of tenants, many of whom are elderly or vulnerable.
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Werners issued eviction notices and utility shutoff warnings to residents in early 2022, despite not yet owning the park. In some cases, their agents distributed these notices while visibly armed, creating an atmosphere of fear.
• Residents reported feeling terrified as they faced possible eviction and utility cuts.
• The Werners allowed rat infestations and unsanitary conditions to persist.
• The illegal actions left many residents scrambling to move, some borrowing money and suffering physical harm during the process.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Werners have been ordered to pay restitution, but the damage to the community is lasting. For many, the $10,000 checks may offer some relief, but the fear and uncertainty they experienced won’t be forgotten.
• $400,000 will be distributed among 40 current and former tenants.
• The Werners are also liable for $57,000 in fines and additional relocation assistance costs.
